History

For the history buffs - do we have a treat for you? We are located on a hill [reportedly an Indian Mound] of a beautiful town that was founded in 1856 as a railroad and river town with the largest population (1000+) in Osage County.  We still survive today as a farming community with a population of 456.

The area attractions include the Townley House Museum, a farmstead that you can tour by appointment.  And, if you get to tour the Townley House ask Emil, a local historian, to see his Tool Shed.  It is something to see.

Our town is rich in German and French history.  Take a walk through town and enjoy the architecture of our homes, Main Street buildings and Churches.  Our churches are a treasure in our community.

The Missouri River that surrounds the northern side of town and connects us to Callaway County has been a lifeline for our community. Many trips where made across the river in canoe, skiffs or ferry boat to look for work, family or a new wife.  Cattle, Grain and other commodities were shipped to larger communities.

The railroad was as busy as the river. The town boasted of a depot and roundhouse at one time. Sadly, the depot and roundhouse no longer exist. The benches from the depot remain intact at the Masonic Hall. The trains still run through our town, although, they rarely stop. We still love to hear the whistle.

Thank you for visiting us and come relax as you reminisce of yesteryear.
